Rules for Item Identification

Identifying the abilities of magic items requires an arcana check (DC varies by item) that incorporates the proficiency bonus (when proficient) and either the Intelligence Bonus (as normal) or the Spellcasting Bonus (Wisdom for clerics, Charisma for bards, etc.).

Items may require multiple checks to identify all abilities. Critical failures (natural 1) may cause an item to be mis-identified. There are several ways to identify items

  • Quick Check
    • Duration: 1 action
    • Arcana check at disadvantage
    • Can be attempted once per long rest
  • Cursory Examination
    • Duration: short rest

  • Careful Examination

    • Arcana check at advantage
  • Identify Spell
    • Duration: as spell (1 minute normally; 10 minutes as ritual)

    • Add spell save DC to arcana check
    • No chance of critical failure
